The first edition of Shadowed Dreams was a groundbreaking anthology that brought to light the contributions of women poets to the Harlem Renaissance. This revised and expanded version contains twice the number of poems found in the original, many of them never before reprinted, and adds eighteen new voices to the collection to once again strike new ground in African 5/5(3). Dreams and Shadows wouldn't have been quite as good without these chapters. I really liked this novel. Though I was slightly disappointed with the ending, the story was left open for another book, which I would happily read. Mr. Cargill has created a deep and detailed fantasy world. Fans of fantasy set in the modern world will love Dreams and 4/5().

Book 2 of the Dreamblood series is better than the first (which was pretty good too). It takes place 10 years after the events of book 1- Kisua is occupying the city of Gujaareh after defeating them in the aftermath of the end of book 1. But the Gujaareen have had enough, and are plotting revolt and a return to independence/5(22). The Shadowed Sun. Gujaareh, the city of dreams, suffers under the imperial rule of the Kisuati Protectorate. A city where the only law was peace now knows violence and oppression. And nightmares: a mysterious and deadly plague haunts the citizens of Gujaareh, dooming the infected to die screaming in their sleep.

As with the first book, I believe this one suffers from mediocre title/boring cover syndrome, but in an audiobook, it's easy to move past that. The way Jemisin approaches the topic of femininity and what it means to be a matriarchal culture is truly refreshing.
